Night Photography – Lunar Stroll

Laurel Hill Cemetery’s Lunar Stroll – Friday, July 19 (and again on August 16)

The historic Laurel Hill Cemetery, located in the north section of Philadelphia, is one of the few cemeteries in the nation to be honored with the designation of National Historic Landmark. The cemetery has spectacular vistas and thousands of 19th-and 20th-century marble and granite funerary monuments on 74 acres terraced above the Schuylkill River in the East Falls neighborhood. Overall, Laurel Hill contains more than 33,000 monuments.  As a landmark site this organization offers unique programming year-round such as tours, movies, talks, food and wine events, and more.

Coming up next is a great event for photo enthusiasts — especially those who have taken our night and low-light photography classes!  Enjoy an after hours stroll and capture amazing images.

Laurel Hill Cemetery

Grab your cameras, tripods and flashlights, and capture the ethereal wonders of Laurel Hill Cemetery after the sun goes down.

During this guided stroll through the site’s picturesque landscape, participants visit some of its most photogenic spots and evocative statuary, while learning to paint with light using only a flashlight and ambient iridescence. You will have experiences to share from this rare and intimate exploration of the cemetery long after its gates close for the night.

Photography experience is recommended. Lunar Strolls will occur on the third Friday of every month from May through August.

Numerous prominent people are buried at the Cemetery, including many of Philadelphia’s leading industrial magnates. Names such as Rittenhouse, Widener, Elkins and Strawbridge certainly pique local interests, but Laurel Hill also appeals to a national audience. General Meade and 39 other Civil War-era generals reside here, in addition to six Titanic passengers.

Laurel Hill’s natural beauty and serenity continue to render it a bucolic retreat nestled within the city’s limits overlooking the Schuylkill River. This green space is further complemented by the breathtaking art, sculpture and architecture.

July’s Lunar Stroll will take place on Friday, July 19 at 8 pm, departing from Laurel Hill Cemetery’s Gatehouse entrance at 3822 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19132. Free parking is located in the lot across the street from the Gatehouse. The cost is $15/person general admission. Advance reservations are required. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or in advance by phone (215) 228-8200 or online.
