Library Staff Recommendation: Skim

A collaboration between the award-winning cousins Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki, Skim is a brilliantly drawn and brilliantly written coming-of-age story. Centered around the eponymous high schooler Kimberly “Skim” Cameron, Skim is the story of a high schooler surrounded by changes in her life and others. Themes of unrequited love, loss, fear and disconnection are all very present and your heart often wrenches for Skim. Mariko’s writing, not just in Skim but in the other work she and Jillian collaborated on (This One Summer 741.5971 T15t), is capable of perfectly capturing a feeling, emotion, or moment with only a few words. Jillian’s art perfectly complements it (and vice versa) with graceful pacing that carries the reader and then stops them dead with elegant spreads.
